Restore C Drive From Whs 2011 Backup
Whs V1 Replacement In 2015
So 2015 has arrived. I have read countless articles on the merits of Windows Server 2012 Essentials, Windows 8, cloud backup, Windows 7 backup and file history, Windows 8 versions and shared storage, third-party backup software (Acronis, Ghost) etc. etc. I am so confused I can't sort things out anymore. Nothing jumps out as a direct replacement for WHS v1, although Windows Server 2012 Essentials seems like the closest (although the most expensive).
What would be the current recommendation to replace WHS v1 functionality for the following setup?
automatic backup of 6 client PC's
pool storage which is redundant
standard WHS server folders for each user's Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos
custom WHS server folders for shared data, program installation files and device driver installation files
remote access to the standard and custom WHS server folders
The most important thing to me is being able to restore all files for a client PC if it dies completely and needs to be replaced with new hardware.
Whs 2011 Connector Not Backing Up / Not Reinstalling
I have had my Win7 notebook happily backing up to my WHS 2011 server for several years now. I can't recall any problem and have carried out restores successfully, like when I swapped the spinning HDD for a SSD.
This may be a proverbial red herring. Six days ago tried Win10, didn't get on with it so reverted. The restore seemed to go well.
Today, after some hours of being green, the Launchpad icon turned red. I checked the alerts and it said several attempts to backup my client had failed, with an amber warning that it has been seven days since the last backup (which appears to tie in with Win10). The error code (1067) pointed to the backup service not running. I tried to restart it and it kept failing.
More searching and the suggestions were to uninstall the connector and reinstall it. Uninstalled.
The first install attempt picked up the server and then computer name and tried to use the existing backup in the server but was met with failure and a rollback to remove installed components. I renamed the notebook and re-tried. Again I was told that the Windows Home Server 2011 Connector has encountered an unexpected error. Click Close to undo most of the changes that are made to this computer.
I searched that error and MS' knowledgebase said that this was because the Windows Media Center Receiver and Scheduler services were not running and should be set to manual and then started. As Win10 kills Media Centre it seemed reasonable.
I started these services and tried again but Connector still will not install from the download with the same failure error. I have not been able to take this any further so if I have missed something or someone has any suggestions, I'd be pleased to hear from them. If I have missed listing some detail, please ask.
Thanks.
Licensing: Upgrade From Windows 7 To 10
I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 and it appears that my license is no longer valid. There is another topic for upgrading from 8.1 to 10 and that license is transferable. It is all the same installer, why not the same license?
I have purchased a license for WHS v1, 2011 and Windows 7. I do not want to purchase a license again even with the 30% discount.
Mac Client Error 500 Lights-Out Agent Preferences
I have a Mac running 10.10.4 as the client and a Windows 10 machine as the "server". The light bulb does not light up. When entering the preferences I get 1 green check mark and 1 red one as well as error 500.
The username on the server has remote access and the credentials are correct. This also happened when the server ran Windows 7 and has continued to Windows 10. The server is running LO version 1.6.0.2375 and the Mac is running the same.
Lights Out Client: The Service Is Not Running!
I have LO version 1.6.0.2375 installed on my WHS V1. In addition I updated the client on my client system which is now running windows 10. Ever since the W10 and LO upgrade, the client system gets the following error: Light Out Client: The Service is Not Running! I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the client software but still get the error. Can someone make a suggestion on the next step or request additional data to help me out?
Thanks!
Windows Client Backup Options
I decided to move from WHS V1 to a QNAP NAS, which has generally been successful but I'm missing the Windows client backup functionality of WHS.
WHS V1 provided an automated backup solution for multiple client PCs running Windows, kept a sensible and customisable array of backups for each client, allowed full-metal or file-based restore and required limited time for backing up and limited space on the server. It managed the backups with automatic removal of out-of-date backups and required little if any intervention by the client PC user.
So far, I've tried Acronis True Image 2015, QNAP's backup software and Windows 7 backup but have found all require more user intervention, take up more time or space resources and generally to be much clunkier in implementaion.
Surely more than 5 years after WHS V1 was released there must be other options that match its capabilities in this regard!
Can anyone point me towards a better client backup solution?
Can One Client Wake 2 Different Servers
Hi,
I've just upgraded the Media server to Win 8.1, mainly to take advantage of some better hardware i had around - 64gb of Ram and dual processors and more space directly on the motherboard to directly connect 14 drives without any expansion cards.
But it seems the backup features in 8.1 are not up to the WHS2011 standard, so i resurrected that one as a pure backup machine.
I've now ended up with 2 Lights Out licences , one for WHS and one for Win 8.1
My main desktop and laptop happily wake up the WHS machine and runs its backups as is expected.
But i cannot seem to get the desktop or the separate media centre downstairs to wake the Media Server
Is there a way to get the desktop and media centre to wake both servers, the laptop only to wake up the WHS box ?
And just to add to the mix, to get the Media Server with 8.1 to wake up the WHS box to run a backup there ?
Or have i just made things far too complicated , just for the sake of using all the bits and pieces laying around.
Thanks
John

Lights-Out Missing After Windows 10 Update
MS put out a list of 30 updates on Tuesday which my Win10 pc applied. After rebooting, the following was observed:
1) Lights-Out icon missing from the Notification bar
2) WHS2011 icon is gray
3) Lights-Out Computer tab on the server shows Win10 pc as off-line
4) Launch pad sign-in does not work from the Win10 pc
5) Lights-Out service not found in the Services list
6) I tried reinstalling the connector but that had no effect
7) Reinstalling Lights-Out version 1.6.0.23275 did not work
Any suggestions on correcting this problem?
Stablebit Drivepool On Windows 10 Pro
Hi
Having bought myself a shiny new server based on Windows 10 Pro I installed Stablebit Drivepool and have run into trouble.
I renamed 3 drives using the Windows 10 interface to DoNotUse_n and then renamed the DrivePool drive to Use_DrivePool and gave it the drive letter Z.
Stablebit is now complaining that it has 2 drive "E"'s. One in the pool with the old drive name "Data (\E)" and one it can't add to the pool with the new name "DoNotUse_2 (\E)". If I try to add the DoNotUse_2 drive, Stablebit complains it can't add duplicate drives.
What to do please?
Oh, and the Use_DrivePool drive appears to have lost all my music that I'd copied there. I do have a backup elsewhere ;-) File Explorer displays all the folders for my music but the folders are empty??? Other media copied to this drive is intact.
Windows 10
Everytime I try to backup my client PC I get "an error prevented backup from creating a snapshot of the volumes on this computer". I did a Win 10 update over my previous Win 8.1 Pro which was backing up properly. When I go back to configure backup I am showing 2 Local Disk drives,. Dont know what they are but something is not right. I uninstalled the client and reinstalled it keeping same name so my old backups would be saved. Should I uninstall again and try changin PC name. Is the windows.old folder left from upgrade causing this? Thanks

Windows 10 Server Not Suspend
I recently upgraded my Windows 8.1 Server to Windows 10.
I then upgraded Lights Out to 1.6.
My calender is the same 7 days a week with 09:00 Wake up, 22:00 Suspend.
The Uptime chart shows this working fine till the W10 / LO1.6 upgrade three days ago.
Now, all through the night the Server suspends and then resumes about 30seconds to 1 minute later.
It stays up for the 10 mins delay I have in LO settings and then cycles round this process all night.
The Recorded Events shows Resume [Task Scheduler]
Is there a setting in W10 that has been changed from W8.1 on the upgrade which I need to alter to stop this resume/suspend cycle?
Launchpad Not Working In Win10
Hello All,
Upgraded machine from win7 to win10
Launchpad was not connecting to server and only allowed "sign-in offline"
uninstalled connector, restart, reinstall connector didn't fix.
Went into Services and had to start "windows server health service" & "Windows server client back up provider service"; both of which are set to "automatic", but were not started.
Did a restart and those two services still didn't "automatically" restart.
Anyone know how to "force" an automatic service to automatically start? Or, any other suggestions?
I have three machines connected and this is the only machine which exhibits this behavior.

Andrew
Correct Ipv4 Settings On Se 2012 And Clients (Win 8)
I've got a mess with IP and DNS settings on Server Essentials and Clients.
Can anyone explain me how to set up the IPv4 settings correctly? I did it like that:
Server Essentials:
-IP: 192.168.1.5
-Standard gateway: 192.168.1.1
-Primary DNS: 192.168.1.1 (which is the router's address)
Client (Win 8):
-IP: 192.168.1.25
-Standard gateway: 192.168.1.1 (always getting a message telling me not to use more than one Standard gateway, but I only have this one!?)
-Primary DNS: 192.168.1.5 (the IP of the server)
When shutting down SE, my client is loosing internet connection (Primary DNS was removed).
I just now disabled Windows LAN Server Configuration Service on my client, as read in a post here. After shutting down the Server, the DNS was still here, and not removed, which is fine - but the client is losing its Internet connection server anyhow. So I have to set it back to 192.168.1.1, but then I get the above BPA error on the Server.
Best Practices Analyzer states that the DNS client is not properly configured. It should be configured to point only to the IP adress of the server. So I would have to set the primary DNS address on a client to 192.168.1.5, which is the IP address of the server itself? I cannot resovle this error message.
Are my settings correct?
Issue Installing Lights Out Client On Windows 10
Have Windows 10 Pro successfully connect to WHS2011...can view alerts and use dashboard from this box.
When I go into the Dashboard, Add-ins, and try install the Lights Out client, it says it is installing on all clients...but never does...and no errors.
Is there anything I can do to work around this? Is it possible to just install the client on the Win10 directly?
Thank you.
Need Advice On Drive Letters
I am currently upgrading my Server. I had WHS Vers. 1 before and I am moving over to a new build with Windows 8.1Pro.
The new build is this..
The OS and Drivepool/Scanner are running on a SSD. There is nothing else on this drive.
All the files are pooled together on other drives.
I am running into an issue that I could use some advice on.
As I am adding new drives, I am seeing the potential of maxing out the Alphabet. Therefore I plan to remove the drive letters and create folders for the drives.
I understand how to do this.
What I am not sure on is....where do I put the folders? I am considering the C: drive. Plenty of room as it only has the OS and the pooling software. The folders on the SSD should help with the zip factor too.
But one of the things that I want however is to allow myself the option of being able to either upgrade to a new OS one day. (Been made available 2012 R2 essentials via work...but that Domain is scaring me)
Or perhaps the OS will somehow get corrupt and need to be reinstalled.
I am trying to understand the impact of the folders being on this drive if that drive were to go down for any reason.
I have considered other drives too,,,but none are any more immune to crashing than the OS drive.
What does everybody advise here? Where should I place the folders?
Thanks
Need A Copy Of Whs 2011 Iso

Cpu Temp Observation Method?
I tried searching but I don't know what is the best search term to find an answer. What is the best add in so I can keep an eye on hardware temp?
I have a home built quad core PC that recently threw a thermal protection code and I was not sure if it was legit or not so I figured the best way to verify is to start observing my server closer.
TIA!

Service Not Running On Client: Windows 10
Hi
I've updated clients to Windows 10 and updated the Servers and clients to Version 1.6.0.23275.
Server is running WHS2011.
One client (I have'nt checked others yet), has the correct version installed but is showing "The service is not running!".
I've tried re-installing the client, but that doesn't appear to have resolved the issue.
Any suggestions on how to get the client service running again ?
Regards
Mark
Lights Out 1.6.0 Build 2375 Update Problem
I'm attempting to update to Build 2375 on a Windows Server 2012 (not r2) machine. I uninstalled the previous version of Lights Out on the server. I checked Add-in's on the dashboard and confirmed that Lights Out is no longer installed. I stopped the dashboard. I double-clicked on the Build 2375 Kit and received a diagnostic that the Add-in is already installed on my server and the update exits.
What am I doing wrong?

Windows 10 Back-Up
having upgraded my laptop from windows 8.1 I was curious whether backup would now work once again.
well, my WHS v1 PP3 successfully backed up my windows 10 home laptop.
dilemma now, do I bother with windows 2016 when eventually released?
Build 2375 Installation Problem
Recently I attempted to update to Build 2375 on my Windows Server 2012 (not r2) server. I uninstalled the previous build, closed the dashboard, and then double clicked on the 2375 kit. The 2375 install aborted with a diagnostic that the add-in was already installed.
The Lights Out add-in no longer shows on the dashboard.
I noticed that last night the server hibernated as scheduled. So, perhaps Lights Out indeed is still running.
How do I get out of this funny state?
