So I spoke to the wife about getting a home server for the new mansion. She's been away this week with work and I spoke to her on the phone about it on monday night. She was surprisingly positive and said it sounded like a good idea. I told her about the HP Proliant microserver and that there was a £100 cashback offer if we bought it before 30 November. She said we should probably get it, but we would talk about it when she got home.
Now, here's where things started to go wrong. I figured I'd won her over and went ahead and bought it. Free next day delivery and it was there before she got home from her conference. Not wanting her to think I had made an assumption that she'd ok'd the project, I thought I wouldn't mention that I'd bought the server until I'd had formal approval - in writing preferrably. However, when I raised the subject she was positively luke warm and cooling.
Her current position is that we should be focusing on more practical aspects of home improvement before splashing out on nice to haves (she might be right). So I currently have a shiny new HP proliant N40L microserver with 8Gb ram, 2 x 2tb + 1 x 250Gb HDD, remote access card, optical drive ready and WHS ready to install plus an 8 port giggabit switch, router and modem all ready to connect, but hidden in a cupboard upstairs. I've told her not to go into the cupboard because her Christmas presents are in there, which should keep her away until Christmas day.
So the clock is ticking: How do I convince my wife that a home server is what we really need right now? Any ideas? Please...
