Hi everyone,
I'm gearing up to build my first WHS homebrew this weekend. I'm about to buy the drives, and then it hit me that I'm still not sure what the recommended configuration is. I was planning to get two WD 2TB green drives (probably EARS, doesn't seem like a big deal to use the jumper or align via the CD). So the question is: should one of these drives be the boot drive, or should I also get a third, smaller drive for the boot drive? I have a spare 160 GB SATA and also a 300 GB IDE drive that's available, or I could buy a new one.
In the Windows world, people often like to separate their OS drive from their data, so if a virus hits or the boot drive fails, the data is still safe. I wasn't sure if this applied to WHS. Is there a preferred setup here?
Also, as a second question, during my research I found a recent post on Microsoft's WHS forum claiming that green drives should not be used with WHS because if a drive spins down on its own without WHS telling it to, then Windows will get confused when the drive doesn't immediately respond and will think it's missing from the pool. However, lots of people on WeGotServed seem to use green drives just fine. So maybe someone could make me feel a little better before I go drop $300 on new drives. :-)
Thank you!
