Hey Guys,
I'm completely new to the idea of NAS systems, and have a few questions as to what they are capable of.
So firstly, our home set up:
Apple iMac
Macbook Pro
BoB Lite Wireless Router: http://www.cnet.com/au/products/bob-lite/
Netgear NeoTV
Chromecast
So, as little as 2 months ago we were using USB sticks to copy media on to, to play through the NeoTV. I tried setting up a shared folder on my Mac for the NeoTV to pickup but apparently there's an issue with it communicating with a Mac (the shared folder was going to be on my mac). So that didn't work due to the neotv not understanding the OS X networking protocol. Then we installed Plex on both our Macs, and have plex streaming to chromecast (our TV isn't a smart TV, isn't capable of networking, or anything that will make this an easier task). So at the moment the media is on the plex folders, the plex app streams directly to the tv. It's a good setup, but the quality is reduced, and plex is buggy at the best of times.
We're looking at a NAS due to the large storage capacity, and the hope that we can steam to our tv using our currently equipment with minimum fuss.
What we want:
The ability to send media/files to the NAS wirelessly
The ability for the Netgear NeoTV to see the media located on the NAS (it has a networked folders function, and needs to be physically cabled).
No cross filesystem issues with using OS X filesystems on our home computers.
Concerns:
The fact the NAS isn't promoted as a wireless NAS, and hoping connecting it to the wireless router will address this issue
The Mac not being able to communicate with the NAS' default file system, and if we re-format it will there still max file size transfer limit
Our wireless router not being extremely fast right now, if there's a way to reduce the quality so that streaming from the NAS to the NeoTV won't be an issue (if this is an issue we can just cable it for now).
Systems we're looking at:
D-Link DNS-345
Netgear RN10400-100AJS
We're looking at the above based on price and availability.
If there are any other issues please bring them up, and i'll happy to answer any other information you may need.
Thanks in advance for the help,
Kurt
