Server Recovery Process

Yesterday I got an update error message from both my server and a client. I went to check WSUS on the server and the console reported that it could not connect. I tried a few things to fix it which didn't work so I tried to reinstall WSUS. It failed to uninstall and eventually I had to use fixit. Then the reinstall had the same problem. Then I noticed that the client launchpads weren't connected and lightsout was showing that the server was offline. I couldn't get any client to connect, and remote web access was down so IIS seems broken. I'm thinking that I'm going to have to do an OS reinstall but I want to try recover first. However I have questions/problems:

I see that I can use Windows Server Backup (Local) to recover data, but also to recover server state. Is this worth trying?

My server backups are no longer on the original backup drive which died, but I made copies. One is on the server pool (drivebender), so it can be accessed from \\server\client system images. Would this work? - I'm wondering if during the recovery, access to the pool would be lost so the recovery would fail?

My server system drive is partitioned with C:\ for the OS and D:\ for the data. I have copies of the server backups on D:\, but in the Windows Server Backup wizard, if I use the local drives option I can only see the DVD drive. Can anyone tell me how I can make it see the D:\ drive?

Finally if I need to do an OS recovery, is the only way to do this an F8 after reboot and reinstall from the installation DVD?
