Advise On Os For Whsv1 Replacement

Hi All,

Looking to upgrade my whsv1 box. I have had good luck over the years and never lost any data due to multiple drive failures but have experienced sub-par read speeds from time to time. I will try to make this as quick as possible...

I will reuse the server and offload data to multiple external 2TB hdds via usb3, do a clean install of "some os" on a single disk and then add storage once the system is stable. finally I will copy my data back via usb3. simple right?

Server:

a case

a motherboard

etc

athlon 64 x2

4gb ram

1 250gb system disk

8 2tb hdds

The server is used solely for data storage. please do not consider pc backup functionality, remote access, vm host, fear of complexity, fear of Active Directory or cost for os.

I have two requirements from this server; data redundancy with the ability to drop a disk in any pc to recover(mirror) and read performance. I would weight these needs 80/20 respectively.

I originally planned to use 2012 essentials r2 & storage spaces but after research have seen many issues with storage spaces. It seems that this software 'drivepool' with 'scanner' is now the way to go? Agree?

If so, what operating system will keep me future proof for say 5+ years? and is a proven winner? I'm stuck between:

WHS 2011

Win 8

Server 2012 essentials r2

Server 2012

I assume drivepool/scanner works with all these? Any replys comments appreciated.

I also want to thank this community and all the members for the years of great information and sharing. I think the fact this is my first post shows what a service this site provides... I've never even needed to ask a question before.

Keep up the good work,

Rich
