Guys,
Here's what may be a really silly question - what are the considerations in moving my home server off of my home network, if any? My server box is a bit loud and a bit hot, and as I consider setting up a web, blog, and email server, I'm wondering if it wouldn't be better to move the box from my home, which is on the AT&T network, to my office at the lab, which is on the USC network (www.usc.edu).
This move would give me a couple of advantages, namely that we wouldn't be spending as much $$ on power and cooling, the house would be quieter, and all backups for client computers would be in a remote location (in case the house catches fire).
What I don't know is how moving the domain controller off of the network would affect things, and I don't know whether USC will let me host my own website from a computer on their network.
Is moving the server off network even possible?
If not, that's fine - but I'm going to need to get a quieter CPU cooler...
