Hello again,
I have a old LGA775 Intel Q6600 machine running WHS2011 perfectly for sometime now, but the CPU is always hot even when at idle. I have been wondering if I could downgrade to say a E8500 dual-core? The difference is the Q6600 runs at 2.4ghz using 105w, while the e8500 runs at 3.1ghz using only 65w. Less power consumption and less heat output.
All I do with this machine is stream to my WD TV Live and my PC and I use it as a file server, backup machine. I do not do any transcoding or multitasking of any kind, its just a file and media server for one and sometimes two clients. It only has 4 hard drives, one SSD for the OS and three platter drives totaling 3.5 TB
So, will the loss of two cores be noticed at all for anything related to serving? I can sell the Q6600 for a tad more than the E8500 will cost me, so price is of no concern. It just seems like something I should have considered a long time ago. We need to reduce our power consumption footprint here but I cant afford a whole new machine to do it.
Thanks for any ideas
