Help Sharing Media With Friends

Hi All,

OK, I 'm not winning with coming to grips with WHS 2011.

I have it installed on a Proliant Microserver, and have my music, videos and photos on one of the drives, and assigned to the appropriate media libraries..

I want to do something which I thought was pretty basic - I want to be able to selectively share specific folders of photos with different friends over the internet. I am happy for the access to require login, but i only want each of the friends to be able to access the folders I select, and nothing more. I don't want them to see the names of folders they can't access.

I would have expected that there would be a means of selectively assigning what folders get shared with which users, but I'm damned if I can work out how to do it. I seem to end up with them getting access to all my media folders, despite the fact that I think I have only set permissions for them to have access to one photo folder. I don't want them to be able to see parent folders, even if they don't have access. I just want them to be able to log in and see the photo folders I want to make available to them.

I would have thought this would be a basic functionality, and maybe it is, but Microsoft in their wisdom have made it complicated.

As an aside, WHS 2011 sure as hell isn't intuitive. For an OS which is meant for the average home punter, and I consider myself a little bit more capable than your average home punter, WHS 2011 is far from straight forward and is poorly documented.

My 5 year old Synology NAS could do what I wanted with ease. I am missing it.....

So,
  • Is this something WHS 2011 can do without additional software?
  • If so, is there a cretins guide as to how to set it up? I think I must be in need of the cretins guide....
  • Finally, if WHS 2011 can't provide what I would have expected was basic functionality in this regard, is there an add-in that would be simple to instal and drive? I have looked at Gallery Server Pro, but it looks way too complicated for the basic level of functionality I am after, and the learning curve looks too steep for something I will only use occasionally.
Thanks in advance,

Dave
