I have no ability to connect my server from local or internet. After some searching, I realized that the problem was that the Base Filtering Engine service won't turn on (Access is denied), thereby shutting off Firewall and some other services. Rather than the server simply being wide open, it is completely shut out from all other machines.
I've spent at least six hours reading articles and forum posts about this and added registry entries, run utilities, added registry key permissions, and more. Unfortunately, my oldest server backup also exhibited this problem (we were out of town for some time). At this point, the server is useless with no apparent way to fix it.
So my question (unless someone has yet another thing I can try!) is: if I just blow away my server and reinstall with the same name, won't the user's get new SID's and I'll have to setup the desktops around my house again? It was a bit painful migrating the first time (not sure why not all settings migrated smoothly). Will this reinstall be a nice drop-in-place "equivalent" server, or will it look like a brand new one that just happens to share the name? What issues might I be facing?
