Can't Add External Drives To Pool

I recently purchase a Vantec NexStar HX4R from newegg to expand my storage. I put 2  2TB drives in the enclosure and connected it to the server through USB 3.0.

The server sees the drives just fine, both in Disk Management and in the Server Storage tab. It lists them as "External (USB)" and gives all the proper info for the drives. Yet everytime I try to add either, it will act like it's formatting it.. but then a popup will show on my computer that the hard drive I'm trying to add has failed and a few seconds later tell me:

"The hard drive was not formatted

The hard drive was not formatted because it is being used by another program or service. Restart you home server and add the hard drive again." (Yes, it actually says "you" and not "your" for some reason)

I've restarted multiple times, initialized both drives in Disk Management, formatted both with and without partitions and also with and without drive letters. Each time WHS console sees the drives no problem, but will not add them from the above error. Any suggestions?

EDIT: I've just tried it through eSATA as that was another option and it was only seeing 1 drive even though my motherboard supports eSATA port multiplier... but the drive was easily added. What could be using both those drives when it was plugged in through USB 3.0? It seems I might have to spring for an eSATA with PM on it?

My motherboard is M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 and according to this list it does support Port Multiplier.. anyone know whats going on?
