I finally got my WHS set up how I want it, I think, lol. The whole 2TB max backup size puts a huge damper on my backup situation of course.
Are there any good and reliable plugins that will do backups of my server data to an external backup (USB)?
My current config is as follows:
2x2TB (mirror) for "Documents" data, basically for all critical real-time data
2x3TB set up as individual drives: Media, Software, Client PC Backups
Those are all 7200RPM Seagate Barracuda drives (got a great deal and want 7200 RPM, tired of slow green drives I've had for years)
I have an external 4 drive USB enclosure (Probox - very nice) with 4x3TB WD RED drives.
I previously was using a WHS 2011 box with old hardware (core 2 duo) that I used Robocopy to backup to my WHS v1 box (Athlon64). It worked fine for the most part, but it was basically only real-time data, no history. I don't think I'll ever need to revert to an older backup, but my paranoia keeps saying that if there is a 0.1% chance I'll need it then I should have it.
That being said, should I just stick with Robocopy or are there reliable alternate WHS 2011 backup uptions with shadow copy, incremental, or with some form of backup history if I need to grab something from the recent past (like in the last two weeks, no more).
I am considering writing a robocopy script that any deleted file (during file sync) will be moved to an "archive" location and then anything older than 2 weeks will be purged from the archive. But before I go through all that, I'd like to know if there's some good alternative to WHS backup. I almost prefer robocopy because it's good to be able to pull the drive and get immediate access to data if needed, rather than load up another program. But both options have pluses and minus.
Thanks for any input!
