Can I Just Pull A Corrupt Drive ?

Hello,

I have a question about whs v1. I'm going to move up to WSE 2012 soon but of course in the last week my whs v1 is starting to have issues (fate :)). One of my disks is showing "pending bad sectors" in SMART. I'm not sure how bad this is, but someone told me this might mean data on this drive could be corrupt, so I don't want to use this as a source to copy my files from (all my shared folders are duplicated, so a good copy should be on the other drives).

So I wanted to know if the following is a good idea.
- Shut down the WHS
- Physically remove the drive
- Start the server, remove the drive in the console
- Copy all my data from it to a USB drive

I should still have all my data since everything is mirrored. I'll lose client backups but since I'm about to move to a new server that's not really an issue. At least I won't be copying anything from the possibly corrupt drive.

I don't want to just remove the drive through the console first, since it will then start copying data to other drives (not enough space anyways for that btw), possibly copying corrupt files.

I would love to hear if this is actually a valid strategy though. Or if someone has a better suggestion ? Or if I just shouldn't worry about the corrupt data because there are safeguards in place ?

Thanks !

Jorn
