Hi,
I have, after many months of pondering, finally built myself a WHS2011 based around an HP Proliant Microserver. I have increased the memory to 8GB (that was a fiddly job!) and have installed 2 x 2TB WD Red drives (no RAID or drive pooling involved). The WGS book was invaluable in setting it all up but three weeks later and I am still debating with myself how to configure my files and what backup strategy to use!
I have fairly simple needs and I want to keep everything as simple as possible. Part of the reason of going for a WHS was that in the event of main server failure or OS corruption I should be able to hook up the data drives to any other Windows based machine and get access to my files.
That’s not to say I don’t use other NAS devices as I have a Synology DS211j (2 x 1TB) and a Synology DS111 (1 x 1TB), the former used for backups and latter used for music storage & Squeezebox serving. I also have 2 x 1.5TB external drives to use for backups.
I am struggling to know whether it is best to use the main server backup functions or whether to go with something like AllwaySync that I use at the moment. As far as I can see, this might get round the 2TB external backup limit and multiple jobs can all be set off at once.
My initial plan was to do partition the data drives (it’s an old habit!) to categorize my files into top level structures and then to do the following:
What is the general consensus around installing applications (like AllwaySync) directly to the WHS OS? I could presumably run everything from a client machine that has access to all the network shares and external devices but ideally I’d like to schedule everything automatically. I know this would be an advantage of the serverbackup facility but it does not seem to be as configurable in that I can’t choose folders to backup to specific folder locations like I can do with AllwaySync.
Sorry for all the rambling but at the rate I am going I’ll spend more time setting stuff up than actually using the files I am storing!
Many thanks
Andrew
P.S. Bad first posting - I spelt strategy wrong in the topic title!

- Use AllwaySync (1 direction only) to backup from my data drive partitions to external drives to keep offsite
- Use Serverbackup to backup the WHS OS to an external drive for disaster recovery
