Vpn Connects But Can't See Network & Stops Internet Conn

I have followed the DMZ "how to" as well as a WHS post but still "no joy" in connecting to my WHS 2011 through the VPN. My main objective is to be able to back up my daughters laptop while she is at college.

The basics of my situation are:

• After following the DMZ how to I can successfully connect to my WHS 2011
  
• I am not able to see any WHS 2011 files or folders.
  
• After making the VPN connection I loose internet connection on my laptop
  
• When I disconnect the VPN the internet connection comes back

Not sure where to go next...any suggestions, or do you need more details?
