File Level Security On Old Whs Disks

Sorry if I am in the wrong forum but I don't know where else to put this post. My previous WHS server died and I hurriedly went out and bought a new Windows 7 pc and put the hard disk in the CPU. I can see and open all the files that were shared/streamed eg photo's, videos etc but anything in the user directory cannot be opened. I can see the file structure in Explorer fine, I can see the files, the name with the correct icon, file dates and sizes etc - but I just can't damn well open them. I always get the 0x80070780 error which I know is the inheritable WHS security error thanks to Googe. However having being badly burnt by attempting to down load software that claimed to fix this issue.... I am loathe to try any clever software downloads again ...
I have done everything I can in Windows 7 to try and change the owner but as a "novice" I don't know where to go next because I can't change the owner to system , administrator or anything else - all options are greyed out to me.
I need this data - how can I get at it please ?
