All,
I've been running WHS V1 since June, 2009. I watched the whole Vail/WHS 2011 story unfold for much of the last three years, culminating with the announcement of WHS 2011's demise.
Still, though, WHS has been a great solution in my home with 2 adults, 4 kids, and 5 or 6 computers. Not wanting to lose WHS support next January (when support ends for WHS V1), and seeing that the WHS 2011 dust has settled considerably, and voids filled-in for A/V and DE, I decided to buy a refurb Dell desktop and turn it into a new WHS 2011.
This forum was great! I learned all that I needed to know about WHS 2011, about add-in options to replace DE, the pros/cons of using an anti-virus on a home server, and more.
As of today, following a week or so of building the server, I'm finished! The WHS 2011 hums along perfectly, and has quite a few features that top WHS V1. Among my favorites:
- WHS 2011 is much faster at everything!
- Stablebit DrivePool is a terrific DE replacement!
- Cloudberry lets me repurpose my WHS V1 server into a highly flexible backup database!
- AVG File Server 2012 (bought through Dell for $16) is a great anti-virus solution!
- Advanced Admin Console is still terrific in WHS 2011!
- Home Server SMART 2012 gives great info on all my disk drives!
- I love the server backup feature onto an external USB hard drive!
Along the way, the forum here on WeGotServed was the single best source of information I received, whether it was the blog posts or the forum posts by users of WHS 2011. THANK YOU!
My next project is to add a new USB 3.0 storage enclosure to house all my digital home video, giving everyone in the house easy access to 150 hours of home video taken over the last 14 years or so. Looking forward to that!
Warm regards,
William
