Hi all,
First off apologies if this is answered elsewhere, I've done a bunch of searches and none of the results answer my question.
My question is whether there is any way to backup both Client Computers and WHS OS to the same external drive?
I recently set up a home server with WHS 2011, on a PC that I rescued from work to use until I've got some spare cash for something a bit more powerful/upgradable. It's a HP 8200 Elite Small Form Factor. It has the standard 250gb HDD and a second 2TB HDD that I added but no space for any more drives. The 2TB is holding all my media files for streaming to XBMC and the primary HDD has been partitioned as standard to a 60gb for OS and 190gb "spare".
Everything is up and running great, but have hit a bit of a hitch today. I bought a 2nd 2TB hard drive to use for backups. I was hoping to be able to backup the server itself and each of the 3 PC's in the house to this new drive which I've connected to the server via a USB enclosure.
The problem is that if I set the external drive to be a backup drive it doesn't seem to allow me to use it for Client Computer backups as well. I tried to partition but WIndows wants to remove that before setting it to a backup drive, but I don't need 2TB worth of space solely for the Server OS backup. Equally, I don't want to run the server without regular backups. I would rather not eat into the space on my Media drive with Client Computer backups, as space disappears all too quickly as it is
I'm contemplating putting the new 2TB drive in the Server in place of the 250gb one, and then using the smaller one in the enclosure for Server backups and the newly internal 2tb for OS install and Client Computer backups. After a couple of weeks of tinkering with set up I'd rather not start from scratch if it can be avoided.
Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer
