Okay, I'm really stuck on what to do here...I'm using WHS '11 on the server box at the house and am using it mostly to stream movies through serviio to devices throughout the house and as a central repository and back-up location for photos, home video, downloaded files and programs, etc.
Having a recent experience with losing all my data , I want to implement a solid back-up plan. After much google searching, I'm more confused than I was before!
Here's what I'm working with:
WHS '11
Intel box with NO built in raid
Primary drive with OS, internal 2tb drive for storage, external usb 2tb drive designated as WHS back
So, I was looking at adding a raid controller and two drives to go to a raid 1 setup as the internal storage drive, then backing that up to the external usb drive.
First question...can the WHS back-up system go to two seperate external drives? That would allow me to add a second USB drive just in case one of them goes on me.
Second question...how reliable is raid on an after market controller? I'd rather not spend more than $100 or so on the controller if I can help it.
Third question...maybe blashpemy, but should I look at switching to a mac mini server setup and using time machine with two external drives? I could throw Apple TV boxes in the streaming rooms, or continue to use serviio.
I don't think cloud service is an option as I'm dealing with 100's of gigs of data.
Any advice would be much appreciated!
