I finally resolved my "Can not establish a trust relationship" error with my XP Home edition PC. The last of six PC's I have connected around the house (and only XP version). I've been trolling the web for months, including the very relevent forums on WGS looking for a solution to my connector issues on XP. Most success stories on fixing this stubborn error appeared to be around permissions including this one.

I decided to start a new thread as I resolved this issue with a method that is somewhat different from other solutions, here is some background and my approach.
Based on what I've read, it seems that some older XP installations like mine, will have a permission issue in folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft
Also to be clear, XP Pro has access to security setting on folders by default, while XP Home Edition does not.
As XP Home Edition hides the Security tab from directory properties I used the following to work around this. The WHS Connector installed on the first attempt after performing these steps on my XP Home PC.
1. Boot system into Safe Mode (Press F8 during boot)
2. Login as Administrator (no password required)
3. Use File Explorer to navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft
4. Open Properites window on "Microsoft" Folder.
5. You should see a Security Tab, click on it.
6. Under the Group list, my system had an entry of "everyone", I used the add button to add my normal local user account as well. I gave myself "all" access. (this is the fix). Save changes.
7. Reboot (normal mode).
8. Login as normal with local user account specified in Step 6.
9. Install connector.
If the above is not clear or does not work for you, let me know, I will try and provide more details. I am writting the steps from memory because after the reboot the security tab disappears again and I can not double check the security settings without rebooting back into Safe Mode (which I can't do right now, system is backing up, first time since I upgraded from WHS v1).
I hope this is helpful.
Cheers.
