Hello, I did a search, but I didn't find an answer. I am considering upgrading from my WHS v1 to 2011. My main reason is the enhanced backup functions, but the media streaming caught my eye.
My question is what exactly can I stream? Like many, I use my WHS as a storage for a large collection of movies. The vast majority are DVD, Blu-Ray or HD-DVD. My current home setup is that I have an HTPC in the living room that records (Ceton InfiniTV) and transfer to WHS, plus an XBox in another room. I use the XBox as a media extender, but while it is flawless on the TV side, it doesn't play nice with ripped DVD's, Blu-Rays, or HD-DVD's.
I know that no windows product natively plays Blu-Rays or HD-DVDs, which is why I have Total Media Theater. I recently read two things that got the gears working:
1) You can supposedly play Blu-Rays and HD-DVDs in Windows Media Player once you have TMT installed as the codec is now on the machine
2) WHS 2011 can stream, via silverlight, video from its own 'media player'
So does that mean the two can be combined? Could I stream a ripped Blu-Ray using WHS 2011? I'm not real concerned about the quality being tip top as the room where the XBox is located is my wife's art studio. She mainly just wants background noise while she paints.
And assuming that this is possible, is it possible to stream outside your home network?
Thanks for the help!
