Boot Existing Whs V1 Partition Under Esxi

I've a ex495 and have upgrades it to a E6400 and 4Gb of RAM. Next step is to get WHS running inside a VM so I can experiment with the hardware more. I've installed ESXi 5.1 on a USB key and can boot into ESXi. I've setup a physical mapping from a VMDK to the existing WHS V1 partition too. However, when I try to boot that partition is Blue screens quickly in a STOP 7B (usually means it can't find the filesystem).. I've tried installing the VMware SCSI drivers (paravirtualization) and LSILogic SCSI drivers (this is was ESXi supports) but it still blue screens on boot.

Any ideas how to boot an existing WHS partition on ESXi (or other VMs even)?
