I know this most likely isn't a OS issue, but it has me a bit baffled.
My server at the shop is based on an AMD A8-3870K APU. I have it and my main client connected to an Asus monitor, they share an Iogear KVM so I have a single mouse and KB, the client is connected to the monitor via HDMI and the server uses the VGA to Iogear KVM to the monitor. I seldom go to the server, but when I do, I simply double tap the scroll lock button and change inputs on the monitor.
Today I went to shut down the server, I was pulling out the 4GB of ram and installing 8GB of ram. When I selected shutdown, I really didn't pay attention to what was happening and left the room. When I came back the server was on waiting for me to hit crtl alt del. First thing I noticed was the resolution was no longer at my previous resolution of 1920x1080. It had reverted to 640x480. I logged in and select screen resolution from the desktop, the MAX listed resolution is now listed as 1600x900. This is bearable, but what happened to my iGPU capability of 1920x1080?
I had an older driver installed, updated it, still no joy. Used an HDMI cable and of course it now specifies the correct Asus monitor model and offers the max resolution of 1920x1080. You might be thinking 'so just use HDMI', I could, my monitor has two HDMI inputs, but the trouble is, when using the APU IGPU and HDMI, while the resolution is set to 1920x1080, is doesn't expand to every edge of the screen, I lose and inch all around. It's exactly how this APU worked with win 7, to correct that I used the AMD catalyst control panel to expand the desktop to the edges. However, WHS2011 has lots of issues using the AMD control panel. So I resorted to only installing the drivers and not the control panel. This has always been the way I ran the server, only when using the VGA output to monitor, I could select 1920x1080 and the screen was filled automatically.
Any ideas what sort of brain fart has happened? Is it possible the MB is failing? Something else to check? I completely uninstalled the AMD drivers and reinstalled a couple different versions but still no joy, only a max resolution of 1600x900. I'm 99.9% sure when using VGA, it has always listed the monitor as Generic PnP monitor, no matter what monitor has been selected.
