I really need to help/advice.
I want to rip all my DVD and BluRay discs to either my whs2011 server or my WD mybook live. I would like the ripped discs to be functional just as they are as if I put them in my DVD/BluRay players, from what I gather, this is best done in ISO.
So I ripped one DVD to ISO, at the moment, I have nothing that will allow playback of the ISO. This is where I am completely overloaded from doing SO much research over various ways to stream ISO from what seems like a billion way to do it.
First off let me say I just wanted to make sure I can stream. The first program I tried was Winx DVD Copy Pro. I created the ISO, after fooling around and finding out it's either above my head to be able to stream the ISO to my Samsung with what I had/have, I then ripped the DVD to an Mpeg2.
I placed this mpeg2 on both my whs2011 server and mybook live. Went to my Samsung tv/smart menu and selected videos. It instantly pops up a couple of win 7 client, my home server and the twonky media server from the mybook live. I verified I could play the movie from either the server or the NAS. This was all well and good, and really quite easy. Although I have little to no options other than play, pause, ffd and rwd. I was thinking this isn't too bad.
I grabbed another DVD and ripped it to mpeg2 as well, placed it on the server and NAS as well. When it played, it was the same thing, only the language was French instead of English (why???) When I play that same mpeg2 from the laptop in which I ripped it on, it plays in English, I just don't get that.... I actually ripped this movie three times, it does the exact same thing every time.
I ripped yet a third movie as I did the two before. The third movie played as the other two had from all sources to my Samsung TV, and it was in English. Now something I noticed new with this movie. It actually utilized my entire screen as opposed to the two previous movies which has a black band at the top and bottom of the screen. I'm not too concerned about this at the moment, although I did check all DVD's and they all listed 720x400 something and all showed 16:9 format.
OK, so back to ISO. I've looked in to serviio, mymovies and plex. From what I can tell, serviio doesn't do ISO, so to me, it's out. Plex doesn't stream ISO to another machine/device, so to my, it's out. MyMovies, with the use of slysoft virtual drive to mount the ISO is supposed to stream to another device.
In my mind I need to use MyMovies, is this sound about right for wanting to stream ISO files? They have a version for windows and a version for the server. I'm unclear how this all will transpire. If I install MyMovies and the slysoft VD, How will my samsung tv, when using the whs2011 server as it's media server source see these files? I really need someone to help me wrap my head around this. Please?
Another option I have looked in to is the WD TV. It appears to do exactly what I want, and all I would need to do is buy the WD TV. From what I gather, it will play the ISO file from a network share from either my server or the NAS, this seems so simple, yet is another device sitting by my TV...
Since MyMovies will not convert Copy protected discs, and I am using another program to do that, such as the winx DVD Copy Pro, or another program I am trying for BluRay which is AndDVD HD Ripper, if I were to go the MyMovie route, the server edition, will I need to purchase points to stream the ISO files? I don't know if the basic functionality of MyMovies will do this. To me, when I read the points policy, it's seems the basic edition would do it, and that I would need to by points if I wanted MyMovies to copy the discs for me, but since it can't do protected discs, and I'm doing that with another program, I don't see the need for that ability in MyMovies.
BTW, that Mpeg2 that played in French as opposed to English, I also played the movie through my PS3 to the Samsung TV, still came out French... Winx Copy DVD Pro support tells me it plays the default language but I don't get that as the DVD plays in English from the PC it was ripped on (when played the ripped mpeg2 file) or from a DVD player. I'm going to try the same DVD with anyDVD as it appears to let me select the default language, and see if it works.
