Strang Registry Error 0X00000051 Crashing My System

Last night I got a notification that there was a new version of StableBit Drivepool so I clicked on and chose to download and install as soon as it was complete it asked me if I wanted to restart which I did without thinking since I was in the midst of adding a server folder and running BitTorrent Sync and uploading a copy of the leaked Flash pilot to a friends Dropbox. After a few minutes I tried to log back on via RDP and it would start up freeze and give me an error message. So off to the basement I went. I have a monitor connected to my server because I find it easier to deal with issues that way so I started the computer logged on and Windows loaded everything seemed to be ok but then it just shut down and the BSOD came up with registry stop error (or something similar) error code 0x00000051. I unplugged all of my externals and tried again same results I opened in Safe Mode and removed BitTorrentSync restarted same results so I tried again in Safe Mode tried to remove DrivePool without any luck because the installer service wasn't running tried to manually start it but no good because of Safe Mode. I then started poking around with my phone and found a post that led me to a registry hack that had me going into Local Machine\System\Select and changing the values of failed to the value of LastKnownGood and then changing last known good the the value of current plus one. I didn't really know if it would work but I figured I was pretty much at the point where I was going to have to reinstall (since I am a dumbass and have no backup of the server). After a reboot I everything started up and it has been running smooth ever since. What I am really curious about is what happened to cause this is it something that even though I have fixed it for now that I should worry about the next time I reboot. Your sever ends up being the most important computer on your network when you are using one for centralized storage as I am sure anyone reading this knows I am planning on removing files from a 500GB passport that I have as part of my DrivePool and making that my backup drive as soon as I post this message (while composing this I came up with that plan) should I make a copy of my current configuration or is that a waste of time if the damage is already done and there is a problem. I have made changes to the system partition and installed a lot of programs and drivers I would hate to have to set all that up again but would end up doing it if needed.
