So my HTPC has 8 SATA ports and currently has 1 120GB SSD (boot) and 7 large drives with 5 2TB, 1 1TB, 1 1,5TB approx. 12.5TB total. I just transitioned to storage spaces and moved all my 10TB or so of data to this storage spaces parity drive.
I added an 8th drive (1TB) and copied to backup drive / cleaned both of my 1.5TB drives to create a parity array , saying its 10TB. I moved data off 1 drive to the pool then added it to the pool, and so on, until all 7 drives are in the pool. and currently finishing backup drive files.
When initially transferring the files, I was getting write speeds of only 20MB, but towards the end, i'm averaging 60MB. Has anyone else had similar results? I know parity has slow write speed so I was prepared for the 20MB but 60 seems pretty decent. Also currently using 8.5 TB of 11.3TB with my 10TB selection. says low capacity; add drives but OK. (when low on space it told me to add 1 or 2 drives).
Actually impressed with storage spaces so far. simple setup and transition, not sure on how well it actually protects my data, but it's not very important data. I keep important data on 2012R2 server.
