Hi,
Been lurking here and other forums for years. So far I have always been able to search up a solution... not this time.
So I have WHS V1. It was running on an old box and supporting 4 clients plus some user shares when it crashed. A computer repair store replaced the motherboard and video card, however to my surprise, they are not the same make and model as was there. In any event, it came back working, sort of. It boots. I can log in directly with a keyboard, mouse and monitor attached and all seems normal, but it won't connect with any of the clients. Initially I could see the shares from the clients, but in the process of trying to restore connection, evidently I broke that too.
So, this has been going on for a while... too long... One of the clients is now toast.
I would like to do two things:
1. Get some of the user data files for the toasted client copied to a normal external hdd that I have. The client will not be repaired, so I just want to recover some files.
2. Fix the WHS and get it to connect and start making bu's again.
I was going to do a fresh reinstall of the whs software, (and in the process remove a really old and small hdd) however, it seems I can't get anything out of the client bu's directly from the WHS. I get a message that says I have to do that from a home computer... I'm stuck
The error that I am getting in trying to reestablish the Home Server Connector Software occurs in trying to locate the WHS. I gave it a name when I first set it up years ago, so the automatic location has always failed. Then on the manual location, with the name typed in I get:
"Access is denied. You must be an administrator to join windows home server"
However, I am running the Home Server Connector Software as an administrator on the W7 Home Premium 64-bit client pc.
The connector software is a fresh copy off of the WHS on a usb drive.
Any help would be appreciated.
