I was looking into adding some features to the WHS 2011 server and thought I would try out the VPN, I installed the routing and remote access and configured it and NPS. It sort of worked ok but I was not happy with the result so I removed it. Unfortunately a side effect of this was that it removed the Remote Desktop Gateway service and its supporting service configuration. This has caused the well documented issue of getting an error message from RWW when trying to connect to computers from RWW. the error message says the gateway is not available. The error message is correct as the gateway manager has been removed!
It seems that in implementing the RWW for WHS 2011 and 2008R2 server essentials Microsoft installed these components outside of the server manager in a workaround method. On a working server the gateway manger does not show up in the Server manager but if you look in the Services you will see that it is there. You cannot just use the Server manager to install the Remote Desktop gateway as it does not implement it in the same way the WHS 2011 or even 2008 R2 Server essentials does. the same thing will happen in 2008R2 Essentials if you do the same thing I did.
There appear to be a lot of people out there with this issue as shown by searching with Google.
Does anyone have any idea how to fix this?
Microsoft will not help as you are not supposed to try to install any other features on the WHS 2011 system and if you do they will not help fix the problems caused.
This was a very useful feature up until I broke it. I tried to restore the system state from backups to the point before I played with it but that just broke a lot more stuff....the RWW was completely broken so I put it back to the point of the restore and at least have that working again.
Any help would be appreciated. I do not want to start over and reload the server as it has been running for a long time now and has a lot of files and customizing done to it.
