I updated from the original WHS to WHS 2011 on two platforms a few months ago. As the machines are used infrequently, I only turn them on as needed.
Everything was running fine until one day, when I booted up one of the servers. The response time was horrendeous. Screen refresh redraws were in slow motion, menu clicks seemed to be non-responsive. File transfers to or from the server would eventually time out.
I booted up the 2nd server and was faced with the exact same problem. Something happened to both boxes seemingly overnight.
Not knowing what was happening, I decided to rebuild the system. Reloaded the operating system, applied microsoft updates, installed application software. Everything was working fine. File transfers worked well. Did the same for the 2nd server. Same results. Next reboot several days later and the problem had returned - system was non responsive and unusable.
Rebuilt Server #1, applied microsoft updates. Did not install any application software. Seemed fine.
Rebuilt Server #2, applied some microsoft updates - did not finish in one day. Rebooted Server #2 the next day and it was sluggish once again. Did not finish install.
Rebooted Server #1 2 days after its last rebuild - and it's sluggish as well. Was running fine before shut down and attention turned to Server #2.
Rebuild Server #1 with WHS (original version) and everything is working well. So something is happening with WHS 2011. Is microsoft pushing down an update that is bogging down the system?
Two machines - nearly identical - yet independently different - so that would tend to rule out any hardware problems.
Need to rebuild again - how can I determine what is affecting the machines performance? With 125+ microsoft updates - I can install one per day and test for any degratation the next day before installing another update (NOT).
