Overheat Issues

I have a netbook (Asus EEE-PC 1005 HAB) it was having an issue with the fan making this terrible gringing noise and it was basically unbearable to use so I went on ebay and ordered a replacement part for it ($2.09). I installed it with ease and got the computer running without any issue (beside the fact that  I broke the clip for the trackpad ribbon the first time I took it apart and the ribbon won't reconnect.) It ran for a little bit and I could hear that the fan was working the whole time then it just shut down which from experience I know to be an overheat issue. Then I noticed that the old fan had two thermal pad that were still on there and that the new one did not have the pads so I figured that was the issue and pulled it back apart peeled the pads off of the original part but that hasn't done the fix I have some thermal paste laying around here but I can tell that there wasn't any paste on the part by looling at the origninal fan. Can I apply paste to this one and if not should I get new thermal pads they were still sticky on the heat sink side but they are probably just sittng against the cpu. I have pasted a core i7 before and it took several tries to get it to work correctly and it still runs a little hotter than I would like.
