Hi everyone,
I hope you can help me.
I'm migrating from WHS v1 to WS2012E.
My WHS v1 consisted of:-
500GB HDD
500GB HDD
2TB HDD
2TB HDD
I have set up a 128GB SSD as the OS drive for WS2012E and I have bought a 3TB HDD to use as a part of the storage pool.
I want to set up the 3TB HDD with the 2x2TB drives as a parity Storage pool. But the 2TB drive are practically full. 1 of the 500GB HDD is empty the other about 1/3 full.
How do I go about doing this and is it possible to have a parity storage pool with different sized HDD?
Can I just create a parity storage pool at first with the 3TB HDD and the 2x500GB HDD. Then transfer the data off the 2TB HDD one at a time. Adding each 2TB HDD to the pool once the data transfer is complete. Then once all the data is transferred removed the 2x500GB hard drives from the pool. Is that possible?
So in the end I would have:-
128GB SSD for OS
2x2TB HDD + 1x3TB HDD for storage pool set to parity
OR
Do I have to buy an additional 3TB HDD and then Copy as much data off one of the 2TB drives onto the two 500GB drives (And use the storage on my PC about 750GB) and create a storage pool from 2x3TB and 1x2TB. Then, copy the files from the remaining 2TB drive over to the Storage pool and then just add that 2TB HDD to the pool?
So in the end I will have:-
128GB SSD for OS
2x2TB HDD + 2x3TB HDD for a storage pool set to parity?
I'd like to try and avoid purchasing any more hardware if possible.
Thanks for your help.
