Hi,
I'm currently running Windows Server Essentials 2012 R2 as the host server with the Hyper-V role installed. I've read many times that best practice with VM's is to have one NIC dedicated to the host and one (or more) NICs dedicated to Virtual Machines. I understand why this is desirable (although at the moment I'm only running with one NIC shared with the host OS without problems) but I've never quite figured out how to actually configure the NICs in this multiple setup. So a couple of questions might clear things up for me.
1. Do I configure one NIC with a static IP address for the host OS, as if it were a standalone PC, with the gateway pointing to my router and the DNS servers pointing to my DNS server (also running on the host OS)? This NIC should not be bound to a HYPER-V virtual switch?
2. Would the 2nd NIC be configured with a different static IP address but on the same subnet as the host OS and this then be bound to a virtual switch but not shared with the host OS? I want to share the same internet connection with the host and all VM's.
3. If the above assumptions are correct would I need to run separate ethernet cables from both NICs to the router or is traffic on the NIC bound to the virtual switch somehow routed via the host OS's NIC?
If I'm way off base with this can someone advise how it should be done.
Regards
Adrian
