I run since a little while an Apple eco-system with a Mac Mini as home server using the "Using OS X Server as home server" ebooks. Recently a made a clean install of Mavericks server and it went mostly fine.
One of the services I use is Time Machine Server. Time Machine Server uses an afp share residing on a firewire disk attached to the server. All client Macs in my network see the Time Machine services on my server and make their backups to this destination. Just my server itself doesn't work. When I try to configure the Time Machine, it just lists the whole disk but not the share only as backup destination. When I try to configure it manually from the command line using tmutil, I get error -50 telling me "no share specified". (The share is ok, as I copied it from a client who works fine.) And when I check the error log, I get the following:
NetAuthSysAgent[2855]: GetStatus: connecting to self not allowed
