Hi all,
I'm the developer of the free tools available @ http://blog.whssafebackup.com/
Just in case you're not familiar with these, they allow you to check your backup DB consistency and optionally pull files out of it in case of trouble (well, if there's enough of the db left).
I've also helped a number of people recover files from their broken WHS databases. Not all cases are successful
I'm currently working on a new project that will turn into multiple addins for the WHS. I'm targeting WHS v1 first and will then port it forward from there.
The addins will concentrate around making sure that your data is 100% safe. When I say data, I mean everything from the data in your shares to data in your backups.
The first addin will concentrate on physical drive health. I want to solve this problem completely. So that if you have the addin installed it will make sure that 100% of all your of your drive's surface is not damaged.
Here's the interesting part:
If any part of your physical surface becomes unreadable (as a result of drive wear or any other means), it will let you know what FILE was damaged and if that file was duplicated. So you know right away if you lost anything and exactly what.
There's a lot of technology behind this addin and I might need BETA testers soon.
You can help me in 2 ways:
1. Let me know if you have any suggestions / features for this addin? Any concerns? Do you find this interesting?
2. I've launched a open BETA web service using the same technology, it's at bitflock.com. If you'd like to help, please visit the site and make a nest. This will help me test the tech. It doesn't do the complete surface scan / file damage detection, but it uses Direct I/O which talks to the disks directly and other very cool tech outlined on the site.
Also, if you'd like to beta test the addin, let me know.
Alex,
Humble WHS Addin Developer
