Hi guys,
I've been using WHS v1 on a Tranquil PC T7-HSA Harmony Home Server for getting on for about 6 years now. The unit is completely headless, and it contains a 500 GB HD, with a 20 GB partition for the system stuff, and the rest as shares. I also have a 640 GB USB drive attached to it, and WHS treats both in internal partition and the external HD as one volume. Recently, the performance of the server has been suffering - backups taking way longer than they should have, random hangs, and transfer speeds to the server have become extremely slow. I analysed the internal HD, and there were numerous sector errors, so I figured I needed to replace the drive.
I thought (probably naively) that the easiest thing to do would be to do a complete clone of the internal HD using Clonezilla, as that transfers over the disk ID during the process. There were loads of sector read errors when cloning the 20 GB partition, but it did ultimately complete. The new cloned system though will only operate periodically, which to me suggests that there was a lot of important system data that Clonezilla was unable to recover.
So, I'm now trying to do a system recovery, but I can't find my original supplied disks. I've managed to get the restore CD and installation DVD images from MS Technet, but I can't for the life of me work out how I'm supposed to do a recovery from a client PC - if indeed I can do it at all.
Could some kindly soul point me in the right direction? I reckon I must need to boot the server into some kind of recovery mode using a USB stick, but I don't know where I get the relevant image/files from.
