I'm trying to figure out if WHS 2011 will meet my needs and would appreciate any comments from current users. My current setup is this:
- 3 client computers (2 Win7, 1 Win8.1)
- Existing UnRAID (linux) server with 15+ TB of storage, important stuff backed up to Crashplan
I'm quite happy with my UnRAID server, so I'm not looking to replace that for my file server needs. Rather, with some spare hardware I have lying around, I'd like to build a WHS 2011 server to do client backup management and be a personal VPN server.
My question is, will WHS 2011 be able to store my client backups on my UnRAID server rather than a local HD? Basically, UnRAID presents SMB shares that can be mounted as network drives or accessed via NFS. If I create a "Backups" share out there, can I specify that as the target for all my client backups in WHS 2011? I can then have Crashplan back that up for offsite redundancy.
Basically, I don't want to be restricted by the size of the HD in the WHS machine or have to run another instance of Crashplan if I don't have to.
