A Good Server Backup Philosophy

I've recently suffered a major data loss with my WHS 2011 server. I'll tell you up front it was my fault. I didn't have a backup of the server OS drive or the shared data. Dumb. But... I'm changing my ways and I'm needing advice on a good backup strategy. I'm looking at local backup compatible with Windows 7 and up to include Windows Server 2003 and up. This is for upgradability.

I've been looking at NAS devices, 4 to 8 drives, just for the sake of redundency that meets my Windows desktop and server software compatibility requirement. I'm also considering some sort of cloud backup integration as well.

The bottom line is I'm trying to do what I can afford to pervent this sort of thing happening again. If it does, I want to have the data backed up in such a fashion as to minimize the chance of loss and decrease the time to recover back to normal. I'm shooting for a local backup budget of about $1500 or so. Cloud backup would be additional of course.

So ladies and gents... please give me some ideas on hardware and backup best practices. Please avoid the temptation to scream dumba#$! as I've told myself that enough for now... :D

Thanks....
