Hi,
I just setup at Synology DS1512+ to replace my WHS v1. I have been a loyal user of the my HP Media Smart Server but it's gotten extremely sluggish. I am also pretty much maxed out on storage, given it's 2TB limit for each bay.
Currently both servers are connected directly to an ASUS router which has gigabit ports.
I tried a test file copy of a few GB and over direct Gigabit connection, I was averaging about 2MB/s which is extremely slow, not to mention a fraction of what it should be. Overhead loss perhaps?
The Synology has - 2 gigabit LAN ports, multiple USB3.0 ports, two eSATA ports.
The WHS has - 1 eSATA port, a few USB2.0 ports
What is the best way for me to transfer some 5 TB of data over to the new NAS?
I am open to pretty much anything right now.
eSATA - if I directly connected the WHS to the Synology, would I be able to do a direct transfer between the two of them? How can I assure it uses eSATA instead of the LAN network connection? I can't disconnect the network cable because I need to interface into them from my personal PC. Does WHS have any sort of limitation like not allowing write access to a eSATA drive (treating it like a backup drive only)?
Has anyone actually tried this? How does each NAS appear to one another?
USB3 - What happens if I got a USB3 dock and stuck a WHS drive into it and connected it to the Synology? What would I see? Can I access all the files? What happens if I stuck the system drive in the dock? Would anything be encrypted?
Any other solutions? Your help is greatly appreciated!
