I recently migrated from WHS 2011 to WSE 2012. At present I am mostly pleased with the product. I'm not using Storage Spaces as I am wary of some of the issues I've read about and I wasn't using any drive pooling in WHS 2011 (though I'll probably switch to Stable Bit if they release a WSE compatible version).
I was excited by the prospect of Folder Redirection as it sounded like the perfect solution to my wife's problem of having her computer upstairs, but the kids downstairs. She is not overly tech savy (she struggles with managing/navagating network shares) so having her users files redirected to the server so they are available no matter where she logs in on the network would be awesome. However, I need the files available locally as well (in case I break the server, my network goes down, etc.). Offline files is the obvious answer, but I ran into an issue with my client drive config that I have been unable to find a solution for. Both my PC and my wife's PC have smallish SSD system disks and large HDDs for user data. When I apply the group policy, the files are redirected correctly and available. However, once I make them available off-line, the offline/local copies are copied to the C: drive. When you are dealing with 400+ GB of user data and have a 128 GB (or smaller) SSD, you have a problem. I've done some searching of various sites and of the group policy settings, but can't find a way to tell the OS where to put the offline copies. Does anyone know if this functionality exists? I struggle to believe it does not, but it would be par for the course if it were.
