I have an old HP MediaSmart Server running WHS 2003. I now want to build my own server with a 64bit processor. I am considering an Ivy Bridge processor. I want to build a server with adequate processing power but low power consumption. My present WHS runs all the time comsuming about 70 watts. I would like a server that supports S3 sleep so that it will consume maybe about 1 to 10 watts most of the time but will wake when needed and still consume only about 75 watts when running. I am still researching hardware.
My question: What is the best software. I could stick with WHS but use the later 2011 version (64 bit) or move up to something like the new windows server 2012 now out in RC . Or perhaps windows server essentials. Over the years, I have had man frustrating experiences with WHS. It even looks like Microsoft is perhaps going to drop it all together. So perhaps I should step up to "real" server software.
I would appreciate feedback on the software I should select for my new self-build server.
