Do you use HDD's on your server or for backups that report Relocated sectors via SMART?
I have a case (20) of WD Green 1.5T drives (WD15EARS - got 'em cheap in 2010). I turned off intelpark on all of them and currently use 4 in my WHS 2011 server. My OS drive is a 500 GB WD black 7200. 6 of 20 show relocated sectors via SMART and I have taken them out of service.
Not to bash on WD, I also have 6 Seagate 7200 rpm drives that show relocation sectors. some of these are quite old. I also have 5 SG LP drives (5900 rpm) and none of these show relocation sector counts.
I don't trust any of them and have access to other HDDs to use for now, so I have pulled all these from service.
FYI, I am reading the SMART data via Stablebit Scanner on WHS 2011.
What's your take on this SMART statistic. No big deal, or avoid drives with non-zero relocation sector counts?
