Had a question about the right external backup hardware. I want to back up my WS2013E server that has a 3 TB storage pool plus a 240 Mb OS SSD. MS guidelines are for 2.5x space for backup, so that would give 8 TBs. Initially, I might go smaller, but I am trying to understand what 8 TBs of backup would look like. I also want to swap 2 sets of backups, with one being offsite at any given moment.
First, is it possible to extend backups across multiple external drives? Or, am I forced to use an external RAID enclosure and something like JBOD to get to 8 TBs?
I have seen some eSATA external enclosures that give direct access to the 4 bays (in a 4 bay enclosure) but I don't know how compatible eSATA is these days. I've had trouble with compatibility in the distant past. This approach would be predicated on backups spanning multiple external drives also.
If I go the JBOD route, I am wondering about the impact of an individual disk failure. Also, I am wondering about swapping disks and having the name of the overall external drive being matched up.
If anyone could shed some light, that would be great.
