Hello,
I am experimenting with Folder Redirection - trying to see if it's something we want enabled or not.
I enabled Folder Redirection just yesterday with the default values (so all user folders are now being redirected).
Everything seemed ok initialy, however, I first noticed a slow down when I tried extracting a rar file on my desktop - it estimated 2+ hours to do it!
So I cancelled and copied the compressed file to the C drive, and tried extracting there. It took about 5 seconds.
This behaviour is observed in all redirected folders. I guess it makes sense, because all files being created in these Redirected Folders are essentially being sent over the network to be written on the server hard drive. At the time of testing this, I was on a wifi n connection; not cabled.
I guess I was hoping folder redirection would work as normal local folders, and sync in the background to the server. This approach would not cause slow downs, because everything is done locally at first, and only copied to the server location afterwards in the background.
Is this performance hit the price to pay to get access to files on any PC using Folder Redirection?
Since adding users to WSE2012 already creates folder shares on the server for each user, I'm thinking of disabling Folder Redirection, and simply instructing users to save documents in their own User Share if they want it located on the server.
What do you think?
