I have been working through problems with my H340 for a few months now off & on. It’s not really that important that I get it fixed fast, as I don’t really use it that much and now that all my networked computers are Win7 64bit, the back-up feature isn’t of any use (though I didn’t know that until recently). I mostly use it for a pictures and music storage/server.
Minor issues showed up a few years ago where the H340 would just be disconnected from the network. Rebooting would restore service for a few months at a time. I had checked the net and found this forum where a few others indicated similar issues. Then I started to get the disk errors messages, which would cause the server to not be available even if it was connected. Disk maintenance never showed any actual issues, but more reboots. About a year and a half ago I noticed that the H340 would only stay connected for about 3-4 days. I copied all the pictures & music files to another computer, so I didn’t have to worry about losing any information and started to try to diagnose the issues using this site and Google searches. It wasn’t pressing so as I managed to find some posts with similar issues I would try the solution, nothing improved. I’m a little computer knowledgeable, but many of the solutions are above my level of understanding. Eventually the H340 would not connect to the network at all.
This spring I decided that I wanted to get it back working. I was willing to complete a server recovery, but the H340 was never found. The network lights flash that all is OK, but the server didn’t show as connected in the router. I bought a video cable to see what was causing the hangup. I found out that the “Backup Service is not Running” error prevented me from starting the console. The Yukon NIC would not behave which makes it impossible to connect by network. I updated drivers, tried older drivers all with no joy and finally bought a PCIe Gigabit NIC, which solved my connection problem I think. Server seems to connect without a problem, but I can’t figure out how to turn off the Yukon in the BIOS, so when the system restore is started it uses the PCIe NIC not the Yukon. Is there a way to stop the Backup Service error?
The GUI Console is great, but it is way too basic for even relatively simple error handling. A headless unit needs much better error handling than this. Of course if the onboard NIC goes south, I’m not sure how you get anything to work?
