Hi there, I have a home server that has successfully run WHS v1 for a few years now. I recently upgraded the memory from 2GB to 8GB, in preparation of upgrading the OS to something more modern.
Since upgrading the RAM, the system has been crashing (blue screen) incessantly, to the point of being completely unusable. I've been troubleshooting this for a couple weeks now with the help of some new online friends, and what we've found is that the computer is stable when booting WHS in Safe Mode, as well as when running Ubuntu Linux (eval version, booted from a flash drive). Memtest also ran for a day without errors. When I reinstall the original RAM, the computer is stable once more.
The message Windows gives insinuates that bad RAM is the problem, but this doesn't appear to be the case, as three different sets of RAM from different manufacturers all give the same results. The advice I was given is that perhaps a kernel-level driver became corrupt, or perhaps is not reconfiguring itself to match the new amount of memory.
So I was wondering...
1) Is there a "repair" mechanism in WHS that will basically return all the OS components to their initial state?
2) If not, then I think I need to reinstall the OS, but I have 5TB of data on 4 drives, and I'm concerned about losing my data. I've read mention of a "reinstall" option, but are there any gotchas with this? Will I have to re-define all the shares or are they picked up automatically? Will the reinstalled OS detect which shares have duplication enabled? Anything I should know about before reinstalling?
Thanks so much!!
