Other day I was setting up a Lenovo 6071, and realized it would save a lot of time to restore it from a fully configured client backup than to go through the whole build process. (btw, this is for my own home use, not business). So I did a restore from a Lenovo 6087 backup to the 6071. So far, so good. PC booted up, Win 7 installed a half dozen drivers that were different, and all was well.... sort of....
When I signed on the Dashboard to check out the 6071 status, I noticed that the Lenovo 6087 was now listed as "Lenovo-6071" and was "off line" even though it was online! After messing around a while, I finally found how to fix the situation. I un-installed then re-installed the WHS 11 connect software on the 6087, and it was back to being "Lenovo-6087" on the Dashboard once again. Also had to reinstall Connect on the 6071 because the initial backup failed with an error about not being certified or something. Now both machines are backed up, and are correctly identified on the Dashboard.
Don't know if there is a way to avoid reinstalling Connect, but it only takes a few minutes compared to hours and hours of installing Windows, Office, and a dozen other apps I use.
And an FYI.... If you do restore backups across Win 7 machines, the System screen may show the wrong computer make, model, description and logo. This is easily fixed with a nifty little program called "Windows7OemInfoEditor.exe". This program lets you customize the System info and upload your own graphic image for the logo. Saves a lot of time rummaging through the system registry to find and correct the proper entries. And its just fun to custom brand your own machines!
