I've got an N40L with (2) 2TB hard drives in RAID 1 run WHS 2011. Last night my server rebooted automatically due to a Windows Update. Well, tried to reboot. I didn't see the exact message but I think it wouldn't boot because I had a USB hard drive connected that it was trying to boot from. I've seen this happen on a client's machine.
Anyway, I removed the USB drive and booted the server. I noticed a message that the RAID was degraded. Turns out that one of the drives has a problem. Getting ready to open up the box and see what I can figure out. But if what is being reported is true I'll likely have to replace the drive ASAP.
A few questions if someone could be so kind...
1) Can I just put an identical drive in place of the failed drive and expect the RAID to rebuild? Probably would have to go to the CTRL + F BIOS interface to do this? A little nervous that it could wipe out my good drive.
2) Is there some Windows based application that will monitor the RAID status on this box? Kinda scary that I had no idea that my RAID had failed and needed a drive replaced. Good thing the second drive didn't fail!
3) Is it possible that my disk / RAID didn't really fail? Maybe something to do with recent Windows Updates and / or trying to boot from a hard drive attached to the USB port may have borked it up?
